Potty Training with Rewards

Posted On: 8/22/2008
Is potty training your toddler more difficult than you thought it would be? Try toilet training with rewards to help your child achieve potty training success.

One of the best ways to reward your child for potty training accomplishments is to create a chart. You can make your own weekly or monthly chart or use a calendar to keep track of your child’s progress. Each time your child reaches a potty training milestone, mark the chart. You can simply draw a happy face on the chart, or you can buy special stickers of your child’s favorite characters. Be sure you give your child a sticker for even small accomplishments, especially in the beginning.

You can reward your potty training child for:
  • Letting you know it’s time to potty
  • Telling you about a wet or dirty diaper
  • Sitting on the potty
  • Remembering to wipe
  • Remembering to wash up
  • Remembering to flush
  • Successfully using the potty

As an extra incentive, you can offer a small reward after your toddler earns a certain number of smiley faces or stickers. The reward could be a small toy, a special trip to the park, or an extra bedtime story.

If you want to be more creative, you can make a board game instead of the traditional potty training chart. Use a special game piece to mark your child’s potty training accomplishments, and mark certain squares on the board game with small rewards. For example, instead of “go ahead four spaces,” one of your game squares might have a special decoration, indicating that when your child reaches that square, he or she can pick a special treat or maybe even get a new book about potty training.
